The first photograph that ever stunned me was HCB’s ”Alicante 1932”. In a flash of chain reaction, the time of a thought, I took in first the undulation of arms leading from the upper left to the lower right, then in quick succession the expression of the central subject, then those of the two women on either side, the patterns and textures of the clothes and walls, and finally the combined impact of the three so different gazes into the lens, layered on top of the other elements. A documentary image rooted in its time and place, yet transcending both. That for me is the essence of HCB: The “decisive moment” when light, composition and subject elements fall in place for one fleeting instant, is more than just a great image, it is a glimpse of Truth.
