Wow, Alexis you certainly captured the subway as it was at that time. We no longer find that type of graffiti scribbled on the inside of the subway cars - it's a nice reminder of what was. I am honored and I thank you for dedicating this B&W to me and to Maura. I like being in her company.

It fascinates me to see these photos of the 80s. It fascinates me because I can go so far as to understand better your evolution towards the spaces, places, corners of transit. Presently you have deprived the spaces of human figures but nevertheless they are always present because without the action of the human hand these places would not exist. Your vocation in the 80 was more photojournalistic although also documentary. Any photo is a document. But in the today photos, the document prevails creating a file of worrying sceneries.

  • Erich Kesse

Erich Kesse said (6 Dec 2010):

Veronnica was worried. I mean, she was really and truly worried. The Number 1 train had stopped at Christopher Street. The doors of their car had just closed. And, there, taking a seat next to Jonny was a man singing a Donna Summer song. "Our Love", from her Bad Girls album. Veronnica recognized it. It was hotin '79. And, "Our Love" was even the theme song at her cousin Tony's engagement party.
Veronnica and her girl-friends talked about Christopher Street. The surrounding neighbourhood was throbbing with gay men wearing tight cut-offs and tank-tops. They knew it as a place where good men went bad. They had usually taken the express train that thundered past this stop, but timing put them here today.
"Dropping this line to give you peace," the lyrics seemed to mock her, "and to set your weary mind at ease..." Jonny was taking it well. He didn't seem to notice. That was the best way to ride the trains in New York, she thought, particularly on the lower East Side or north of Central Park. Of course, with all of the Spanish spoken above Central Park, it was easy to ignore comments and odd behaviour. But, this was Christopher Street; the song was in English; and, she couldn't help worrying that they secreted some subliminal message that would bring Jonny back here.
Veronica just couldn't worry about that now. They were on their way to see Jonny's mother. She'd fallen badly and was recuperating in Saint Luke's Hospital. She stared dispationately off into the distance as she'd seen Jonny do. She was certain that her worry didn't show.
