Photo taken during Heiva Festival in Bora Bora, Tahiti

HEIVA
Every July Tahiti has a festival called Heiva to celebrate Tahitian traditions & culture. During this time there are many celebrations, including the most important national holiday, Bastille Day. But the true excitement around this festival is the several inter-island competitions in several areas of traditional Tahitian arts and sports. It is a little like the Olympics and a very impressive talent show all rolled into one massive spectacle. Some of the most impressive things to witness are the dance competitions. Normally, we mainlanders are accustomed to the 4 or 5 person “hula” or island dance show. But when you take that dance and increase it by 50 or 60, it is a sight unlike any other. The power of this show is most definitely the strength in numbers.
