Like men older men, smoking is a huge part of life in rural China. I believe one newspaper here said that nearly 80% of men smoke. When you meet someone, you are offered a cigarette immediately. Smoking takes place everywhere, in crowded buses, in the bank, while teaching, by police officers next to the no smoking signs. It is an epidemic of rural China. We have seen young children less then 10 picking up dropped cigarettes to smoke. Men buy cigarettes instead of medicine or food if given the choice. It makes me sad how strong the power smoking has over the culture and people here.
