Dafne Westerhof is a brave lady who saves the lives of pigs and gives them a happy and beautiful life on her farm, Het Beloofde Varkensland (The Promised land of Pigs.). A few months ago she 'stole' a pig from an abandoned piece of land, named Eva. The pig was badly neglected and needed immediate medical care.
Eva's 'owners' were in France at that moment and had left the pig all by herself without enough food and no straw to sleep on and under. It was freezing 15 degrees centigrade at that time and the ground was frozen and pointy. This caused her skin to break and created wounds. In addition, this pig is of a breed that doesn't grow much hair, so she was very cold which worsened her arthritis.
When they got back they went to the police saying their pig was stolen. In the end the police came to pick up Eva and bring her back to the place where she was not treated very well, to say the least.
Dafne took this case to court on March 25th and hoped to be able to create jurisprudence so more people would be able to save neglected animals in the future without risking a fine or even imprisonment.
It turned out differently. Dafne was charged with theft.
The judge decided the pig Eva is like a bike. A stolen good that needed to be returned to its rightful owner. A sad day. I believe Dafne did not go to prison after all, which would have been really absurd, but Eva is back to her owners who didn't take good care of her in the first place.
