Stef was working with the horse trainer and I went to take some photos.
The lighting was very bad. All the photos were shot at ISO 1600 F/2.8 and a shutter speed of 80. The lens was a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8.
I turned the autofocus off at times because the lens couldn't autofocus because of the low light and chose to manual focus. Forgot to turn it on for a series of shots. This is one of the photos after a lot of editing.
Yesterday I thought I really liked this shot but I wanted the horse head razor sharp aganist the background and it was slightly out of focus.
The new theme gave a reason to post it.
It's hard to see with JPG Low Res Images. Displayed on a 28" monitor at 5700 pixels or printed out in 13" x 19" the unsuitablilty of this image is plain to see

What an amazing "mistake". Sometimes we learn how to repeat them when appropriate. This is one you should repeat. Excellent shot and entry.

Don't you just hate when that happens? But having a great result in spite of the mistake is a bonus. How cool that you had this shot just a couple of days before the theme opened!

Suzanne McGeady said (14 Apr 2010):
I like this because it still shows a great deal of detail, not sharp... but then I didn't like that tight strapping around the horse's neck. Is it there for a purpose? The tiny bit of 'white-wall' in the horse's eye gives him a worrying look. The looseness of the reins suggests the rider and the horse have a good understanding.
Mistake? Not from where I'm looking Joe. -

This is a fantastic shot. Full of action and movement. A great equestrian photo.
-
Karen Lynch gave props (16 Feb 2011):
I love this in soft focus, shows action. In photojournalism with an editor who hated flash photos, I worked in low light often with a lens that wouldn't open wide enough. I often had problems with motion in low light but sometimes it just works on some subjects.
