The authenticity of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s work has inspired my photography. His ability to capture a subject in its natural circumstances helps to portray realism in his work. Candid photography focuses on the scene itself. It answers the questions: how would I view the subject without a camera, what emotion does the scene reveal, what is my gut telling me, is there any reason for me spend more than a couple of minutes observing, and does the subject tell a story. Cartier-Bresson said "I suddenly understood that a photograph could fix eternity in an instant."
I was at the Philadelphia Art Museum trying to get some inspiration from the exhibits. Suddenly, I saw my daughter being the typical teenager at a museum. She was listening to her mp3 player, unaware of my presence. I shot this photograph in an attempt to capture the essence of youth in our modern world, with all of its distractions.
