The Children of Araraguara
Taken in Brasil. We travled by foot and by motorcycle (as the roads were too narrow and damaged to take a car) through the jungle to reach this village. We had a medical doctor with us that administered drugs to the sick and we had a team of 5 that prayed for the sick after the doctor gave them their meds. That evening we held a small church service that was lit by motorcycle light as they had no electricity. I took this shot of the kids later that night. They looked at the image for 5 minutes on the back of my camera after I took it. I am sure they had seen photos before as they weren't scared of me taking their picture, but the digital display on the camera mixed with all the colors and light in this image had them transfixed for a while. There is slight blurring of some of the kids because the exposure was 30 seconds long and even though they were instructed in Portuguese to "stand still and look at the camera, not the flash" they are kids and they moved a little.
In the Beleza photo essay.
