A Coast Guard helicopter searches for the bodies of two women who drowned at Agate Beach in Port Orford, Oregon, on April 23, 2010. One body was found several hundred yards north of where they had drowned, while the other was found 30 miles south on April 26th.

The Coast Guard’s ongoing heroic efforts have saved many lives on the coast of Oregon, and have also provided critical evacuations and recoveries.

The water in the foreground is Garrison Lake, which is separated from the Pacific Ocean by a narrow dune. The sea stacks on the horizon (under the helicopter) are part of the Orford Reef, and are 5 miles out to sea.

Dedicated to the memory of those who drowned: Anna Darlene Bryson and Kathleen Meeker

First, my sympathies to the families. Second, I have had the honor and privilege of photographing the pilots and rescue swimmers here in L.A. doing their training. Third, stunning sunset!! You have my vote!!
