If you take this notice literally if you need assistance, perhaps due to the poor design of the train or the station, you will never be able to catch the train 'if you require assistance'.
It was common at smaller stations that the only way a wheelchair users could leave the station was to cross the railway track to the other side with a member of platform staff, after the train had departed.
