As a teenager, back in Transylvania, I was very excited about 1st of May parades. They were a BIG thing. As a young Pioneer of great conviction - due in equal measure to naiveté and brain washing - I was very proud to be given the starring role to bang a drum in the first row. My poor Mother was afraid that I'll catch pneumonia as I refused to wear anything but the obligatory uniform even if it was unseasonally cold.
By 1967 when I took this shot, I was content to look upon the event as just another photo opportunity. The disillusionment came a year later when the Soviets marched into Prague.
