I love the simplicity of the upper picture plane; almost static compared to the swift converging diagonal lines at the bottom. The contrast is wonderful. The long boats coming in from the lower right stop just short of penetrating the dark area formed by the light value of the boat gunnels. The dark area, low center, takes the form of a torso with spread legs and uplifted arms. This is emphasized by the bow of boat with the white box seems to be lodged firmly, creating the contour of inner thighs. The top edge of the female figure seated in the boat, delineate a rib cage; while the bottom of where she sits curves just enough to give the dark shape a slight look of a three dimensional waist with a dark spot where the naval would be. The torso looks as though it has uplifted arms like Atlas holding up the world, but then fades into the strong upturned horizontal that extends 3/4 of the way across the picture plane and stops the rapid movement below, holding it at bay like a guardian for the serenity and calm of the very stationary world above; one area fixed to the ground, while the other so mobile and free.
Beautiful Image!
