Q: My sister in-law recently gave me a Canon EOS 10D digital camera body. Having only used point and shoot cameras, what would be a good beginners lens to get for this camera? Should I get kit lens to start with?

A: Do you know?

My favorite feature of my SLR camera is taking loooong exposure water pictures.

I always wondered how photographers made the water look so smoooth and once I learned how, it became my passion to hike and find waterfalls and streams to get scenic long exposures.

These are Elakala waterfalls found in Blackwater Falls State Park, West Virginia. I come here often and find different perspectives each time.

This shot was at F/22 and 25 seconds.

Wow.. this is amazing. I thought you did some kind of "Photoshopping" to it until I read the details of how you set your SLR at 25 seconds and f.22. What time of the day was this taken and what speed ISO?

  • Forest Wander

Forest Wander said (19 Jun 2010):

Thank you Michael for the comment.

Actually this was taken around 1pm and the ISO was 100.

It is tough to get the lighting right at this time of day without using filters.

I used a ND 4 filter stacked on a circular polarizer to slow the light down at this time of day.

The camera is a Canon 5D Mark II with a Sigma fixed focal length 28mm lens.
