I use spot metering almost exclusively, especially when I do portraits. I particularly use this camera feature when working with natural light coming from a window or a doorway in order to bring to attention the particular way light falls on my subject. I lock focus on an interesting part of my subject that has strong light qualities: the eyes (the eyes is a most obvious choice), a smile, perhaps a lock of hair or the way a hand rests. This is the area that I want to be evenly exposed. When done right, you end up with a beautiful photograph with deep, velvety dark tones around your subject and beautiful subtle shadows around that correctly exposed area you selected. Convert these photographs to monochrome for some beautiful black and white photographs.
