Most people, today, don't realize that the total killed on this island was more than the totals of Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined.

Mike, thanks for sharing this with us, and congratulations on your being published. The maniacal defense of this island was all the justification Truman needed to use (still untested) nuclear weapons. The bombs spared the Allies an invasion of the mainland and probably saved a million American casualties. Quite an impressive shot.
