Nuristan, Afghanistan, September 2006. A US soldier takes cover from dust and debris as a Chinook helicopter lands on an improvised landing zone. In the difficult terrain of north Eastern Afghanistan helicopters bring troops and supplies to areas that are otherwise unreachable by any other means.

You have taken me to the thoughts of the man in the centre of this image. I'm wondering if he's feeling sand arcoss the back of his hand and his wedding band; if he is thinking of his wife whose embrace he's rather have his face buried into instead of these smelly sandbags.
