Shirley -- First, this is a most handsome photo. This should be sold to the Illinois Dept. of Tourism for placement on the official highway map. It is outstanding!

Thank you very much for your tribute. We drove the entire Lewis & Clark Trail over two summers, 2001-02. Little did we know that most of the explorers made camp on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River (opposite St. Louis) during the Winter of 1802-03. But, when we learned that they did, we crossed the Mississippi to East St. Louis and turned north and drove along the eastern bank of the Mississippi until we found the encampment. (It looked a little like Stonehenge.) We had no idea that the lookout tower was in the works, but now we have another good reason to visit St. Louis.

    Thanks again for your thoughtfulness!
