Two of the three young grebes who hatched out on our pond, all three are reaching full size now. The crest of feathers on the back of their heads are now beginning to show together with the red facial markings typical of this breed.
... this photo was taken through a curtain of willow trees and cattails which surround this pond. I had no idea whether the photo would be workable or not but because this was the closest shot I had ever been able to capture of them I didn't think twice about it.. good thing I did because they were soon half-way down the pond.
