In the interest of fair disclosure, I uploaded this shot a year ago when I was “new” at JPG. No one saw it then, so hopefully my breach of protocol will not result in JPG charges!

I used this shot to introduce my “Sign of the Apocalypse” series, as it occurred to me that a stuffed animal jammed in a car’s broken grille in the middle of the Utah desert was somehow apocalyptic.

I am uploading this shot a second time because I need something totally ridiculous to introduce one of the most insane videos of all time.

Several weeks back I linked Bo Diddley’s “Bo Diddley” (1955) to one of my uploads, asserting that “Bo Diddley” was one of the most important building blocks of what eventually became “rock ‘n’ roll.”

In fact, the Bo Diddley “jungle beat” has been copied many times. To prove the point, in later uploads I linked “Hand Jive” by The Johnny Otis Show (1957); “Hey Little Girl” by Dee Clark (1960); and “Not Fade Away” by The Rolling Stones (1964). I could have linked “Mickey’s Monkey” by Smoky Robinson (1963) and “I Want Candy” by The Strangeloves (1965), among others, but decided to conclude the series here and now.

Shirley and Company’s “Shame, Shame, Shame” (1975) is so over the top that, as you listen to it, you might not even realize that this disco "classic" is a modern arrangement of the Bo Diddley “beat.”

I am linking Bo’s original appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show (1955) and Shirley and Company’s public appearance twenty years later (1975). Can you detect the similarity?

BE SURE to click on Shirley’s video! The opportunity to see this video is worth the cost of your JPG membership! And, BE SURE to enlarge the video so that you can read the first comment (Edgardo’s) in the YouTube comment section!

Disco was so bad that it made me yearn for the good old days of . . . Mungo Jerry . . . I think . . .

As always, thanks for stopping by!

[My thanks to Steven for sending me the awesome video he and his friends shot of the late Bo Diddley performing at peak power years ago.]

P.S. I don't know what happened to the "dog on the hot tin grille." (My thanks to Tennessee Williams for the word association.)

Great shot, Dick! I really enjoy these links!! Like you I hated Disco....and was elated when it just sort of "went away." I survived Disco by ignoring it for the most part. :)) I loved Rod Stewart, from the first time I heard him sing Maggie May at an Octoberfest at Bishop Flaget High School fundraiser.....I was hooked and would have loved to have been (one) of his wives. LOLOL....also loved the Stones and many, many others. Thanks for the memories and the great and cool music!!! Such a wonderful step back into yesterday. :)

P.S. I saw Rod Stewart in Las Vegas, and am still in love with him but don't tell anyone. LOLOL

LOL!! I love Bo Diddley and I love Disco. No one is allowed to tease me about that. I am after all, a child of the 70s. Luckily, my mother introduced me to all sorts of music. What funny picture. I do hope the radiator doesn't overheat.

Time travel! lol Yeah, disco sucked as did the hair and clothes of the era. Thank God Elvis Costello came along and saved the musical world.

You know....looking back on "disco" it was pretty comical.... of course, in 1975 I was just "coming of age" I turned 16 that year so disco was THE thing to listen and dance to. Thanks again for the comparison because looking back at that...I really didn't like Disco either :~) Cool shot!!!

Cool shot and cool links! There are few musical expressions I can bring myself to hate, and I love both of these. My brother and cousin had platform shoes as high as those in the second link: mine were only slightly more moderate...

First of all, I just want to give you fair warning that the JPG police are right now consulting with Judge Judy regarding charges for double loading--I think it's a felony, but you might want to contact a lawyer for clarification! Secondly, since I was definitely a wild child of the 70's, about the only thing I remember of disco is the morning after, when I would try to remember how to extricate myself from my bed. I would have a conversation with my feet that went something along the lines of 'dis go here, dis go there'. It's all a bit hazy. Seriously (now that's a scary thought) thanks so much for your marvelous photos and narratives, and those fabulous links. Truthfully, I did like disco, I get the 'beat' connection, John Travolta was my hero, and that's all I'm gonna say!!

I remember Ed Sullivan getting uptight over some of the performers that were on his show...but I wonder now this many years later if that was all put on and what people expected of him... and perhaps he was a different person in his private life than he was on screen...Thank for bringing back some of these memories and oh yes, thank you for the spotlight:)

I have so enjoyed reading all the above comments to your narrative Richard. Set me up for the day. then to listen to Bo (The King of rock 'n roll) Diddley was again an enjoyment. I'm not a fan of The disco, being a child of the fifties! Although I did like Saturday Night Fever with John Travolta. Concerning the repost above...I say why not? Oh no here comes the Judge, the courts in session!! Overruled!!! The owner of the car must like his doggies sunny side up. Memories eh?? Love them.

I could be wrong about this, but I think everyone faving and commenting on this shot was born in the 1940s or 1950s with two exceptions (Regenia, born in 1967, and Susan Littlefield, born in 1907). LOL We are dating ourselves! You know, not actually dating, but revealing our age as it were . . .

Now everyone knows, and the worst thing about that is now I'll have to change my profile picture to something that wasn't taken 5 years ago when I was 98!! Sheesh....what ever happened to attorney-client priviledge?!?!? Is this about that bill I never paid???

Signs of the apocalypse are sprinkled around here, too, as there are a number of Mack trucks in the area with big stuffed teddies tied to their grills with ribbons... surely indicators of Doomsday... Great capture, Richard, and linking up to Bo!
