Today is National POW/MIA day in the US. I attended the dedication and viewed the movable wall today in Andersonville, Georgia.
On our left is Lt Edward Roberts and on the right is Prescott. They served in the Army Air Corps together. Lt Roberts spent time as a prisoner of war in German Occupied Poland. He suffered a very bad leg infection while there. He also was thrown into the Typhus ward and is lucky to have survived. You will notice that Prescott is wearing a Purple Heart. Lt Roberts has difficulty speaking but I enjoyed listening to his wife tell his story. I wish I could have talked with Prescott more.
In the National POW/MIA Day photo essay.

They really were the "Greatest Generation." So sad that we are now losing most all of them. Fantastic shot of these two officers....and heroes!!!!

I can relate to this commemoration of our POWs. My two Uncles spent four and a half years in a German Prison of War Camp. Starved, beaten with chains, but never bowed. Came back living skeletons. My Mum's brother, and her brother-in-law. My Uncle at 93 is still alive. They were indeed all heroes. Bless them all. Regenia thank you for being there to take such wonderful portraits.

I swim with a man everyday...named Mike. He is 87 and one of my dearest friends. He took three bullets trying to save his fellow soldiers on a beach in Italy. He has the Purple Heart and the Medal of Valor. He never admits that what he did that day amounted to anything heroic. His eyes just fill with tears as he remembers his fallen friends. I watch his limp, see his pain both psychological and physical, on a daily basis. There are no words for this sort of courage and bravery, are there? Interestingly, another close friend was able to return to the beach in Italy, where Mike had fought that day, and gather sand, which he put in a bottle and brought back here. I wish that others could have seen the look on Mike's face while he held this tangible piece of his history in his hands; as if he were transported back to those moments. Mike is absolutely my hero. This is an important photograph Regenia. I am happy that I saw it.
