I captured this Turkey Vulture in Corpus Christi, Texas. They are creepy up close but so graceful in flight.

They are indeed one of the most graceful of birds and an underappreciated social servant perfoming a necessary but (to us) repulsive task - I love watching them in the early morning with their wings spread...drying off - Beautiful shot!

Those are some big birds! They "introduced" them in a nearby city here to clean up the pigeon population. They did pretty darned good at that task!

Excellent Capture! I seen a bunch of these guys flying near the top of Devil's Tower in Wyo. I thought they were Eagles from where I was, but a park ranger told me they were Turkey Vultures. They are cool flying! Nice Job Regenia!

Richard Bruns said (2 May 2012):
Cathartes Aura ... they are beautiful and magnificent. They prevent disease by disposing (rapidly) of carrion. They are very social birds performing a necessary service that benefits mankind. Their heads are bare so that they can easily clean themselves after feeding. When they are swirling together, mostly during the morning, they are riding thermals until they break away from their roosting area to go 'hunting.' This is called a kettle while the are on the thermals. When roosting together in the evening before dark and they are still visible, they are called a 'wake' because hunched over and silhouetted they look a little like they are in mourning. The wingspan of an adult can range up to 7.1 feet, yet they weigh 3-4 pounds. This one is a youngster one-two years old. For the first year they have black heads; from one to two years their heads turn to an intense red.
