The American Southwest is a harsh environment. And that is where you will find Oatman.
We wonder why anyone would live there.
I drove up the hillside for a look at the “residential district.” This and the following upload are a very small sample.
As always, thanks for stopping by!

Well done, Dick! Is this that stretch of highway between Hoover Dam and Kingman, AZ?
-
Richard Knight said (13 Oct 2010):
Thanks, Don.
This part of Route 66 is between Kingman and Needles, California. You are thinking of U.S. 93 between Kingman and Hoover Dam, which is, itself, an iconic stretch of road! -

Fabulous capture of the hardscrabble life of the people in that area. I imagine, given the state of the economy, that they have little choice!

Fantastic captures of extremely interesting places.... I love Loretta Lynn, and I've been watching some of the miners "come up" today. Great compilation for our friend, Joe. !

Wonderful shots, Richard! These should bring us to our knees, and make us realize more than ever how fortunate we are. I have been on these roads, and they remind me of the hollows in Eastern Kentucky...some of them at least. I have been watching the miners come up and have been very touched!! What a great day this is for them!!! Thanks for once again showing us more of our beloved America!!!

A harsh reality of life...that some people either buckle under because of their circumstances or they become stronger in spite of their hardships...

An excellent and thought provoking collage.. this is such a difficult time for so many. And bravo to the miners in Chile who toughed it out! .. A very nice tribute.

Very sad, but beautifully captured. I'm most moved by the largest image. The owners of that house obviously make the best of their difficult circumstances. Love the splashes of red.

Wouldn't you love to see inside. It's probably fabulously decorated with antique furniture, persian carpets, maybe even a Van Gogh on the wall.

Your understanding of place and time is very acute, and it really comes together in your composites. I'm amazed at how consistent your photographs are in each composite: light, color, perspective.

This defines poverty in America so well! I have to wonder why no one moves on in search of better surroundings. Judging by the looks of this place, almost anywhere would be better. Still it is a very interesting place.
