It's time for me to move on from JPG. I find it difficult, because I've spent countless hours scouring and perusing images posted by YOU that inspire me to be a better photographer.

Why am I moving on? I am not sure...I know I dislike the way certain images with graphic nudity can bypass the filter with ease and cause problems for people looking at photos with their kids. I personally don't have an issue with nudes unless they are just blatant porn...but I understand the fear of looking at your friends' photos with your kiddies and seeing a naked vagina show up in the Spotlight. It's just stupid. And if it's bothering friends of mine here...then it bothers me.

But really the main reason I'm leaving is time. I lack it. And sadly this place has done nothing for me but make friends and give me photos to look at. Being on a site like Flickr has gotten me a few sales and phone calls of interest...but JPG...nothing.

And the bigger problem here is that there is too much preferential treatment going on. For example: There have been numerous artists who join, post 3 photos and have one of those 3 posted in the main slideshow on the frontpage within days. It's the JPG editor's who pick those images...and I've complained, but it's still going on. Other artists who have been here for a long time end up watching newbies with friends on the inside get the special favors. Silliness.

And the activity is dropping...

Bottom line for me...with a full time job, family and photography, I have to prioritize my time to only the things of great benefit. And sadly, while I really do enjoy the people here and the friends I've made...it's just not doing anything for me.

I'd like to mention a few people...Kathleen Mercado...you have been an inspiration and great friend to me. Please don't quit making the beautiful images you do. Tricia Louvar is amazing...I love her stuff. Susan Littlefield has been one of the best friends I could possibly have here. Supportive and so complimentary. Than you Susan. Others...Bruce Miller, Regenia Brabham, Dennis Bartsch, Petra, Leslie Hunziker, Joe Failk, John Linton...I appreciate you all and people I forgot, like Jenny Murphy, Jo Haberman, Laurie Search...tons more I'm sure. I can't name you all right now.

This image is my farewell to you all...a long, fading dirt road near my old house. One of my favorite photos ever.

(UPDATE: The lack of response to this farewell kind of gives me proof that it was time to go. None of the people I mentioned in the post even bothered to say anything. Blah.)

Hi Mike, lovely image and farewell message. I will look you up on Flickr. I am like you, short for time. But try to call into Jpgmag when I can. You are a huge inspiration to me (sorry that I may not have said that often enough) and many others. Take care and see you on Flickr.

Mike....not sure if you're checking this account or not. I just wanted to add my VERY late thank you. As you are probably aware, I left JPG the day before you posted this, and was gone for over a month. I would not have seen this if someone hadn't pointed it out to me this morning. I certainly understand everything you said in your narrative, especially since you are trying to sell your work. As you know, my main focus was to make people laugh while being able to see some marvelous photos from real photographers. It was the nudes that sent me packing, and the return requests from so many people that brought me back. Thankfully, I can see your work via the links you post on Facebook. To me, you're still a rock star!!

Your words speak sense to my mind and make me reconsider why I post here. I'm glad to know you on Flickr and Facebook and will keep up with you regardless where you show. I'm glad for Jpeg because this is where I first met you and was awed by your HDR work. You are a fantastic man and talent, and I'm glad we got to go shooting for a day last summer, chasing monsoons.

It's sort of an interesting thing isn't it? How the "nudes" have sent people like Susan "packing"...I can't help wonder what Michelangelo or Botticelli would find to say to Susan. This is not the place for this sort of rhetoric, anyway. This is a website for photography. I hope to learn and to grow here, and can say that my friend, MO, has helped me to do that a little...and also to listen. I will miss you, Mike. I feel like we have been growing together.

Be careful how others influence your creative spirit...that belongs solely to you...that is your special place, and should stand outside the realm of politic. It should be simply...you...alone.

    I love you, Mo.

My best to you, your dear wife, and your precious Lilah...

    Kathleen

    Mike,

We all come and go. Why not let our work stand for internal rumblings rather than pursuing external validation. I appreciate your kudos, though. I'm always late to the party or not at all. It's just how I meander on my path. I like your path, too. Keep following your dharma.
