This is a log/section of a catalpa tree we recently had cut down. We knew it was damaged and at risk of falling on our house, but I was still surprised to find just how hollow it was. The entire center of the trunk was missing it's core, due to insects and/or rot. This tunnel extend almost the entire length of the tree, at this point being about a foot wide.
Next spring we'll be planting a new one in it's place.
Taken with my D5000: f/3.5, 1/50 sec, ISO-320
