On maps this block long country road is called, "Cottonwood Drive" after the trees that the railroad workers planted when they lived here. I don't think of myself as a misanthrope, but I don't think I would like this road as much if there were still houses on it. There's an apple tree up on the right that ripens in October, and by November all the fruit has fallen to the ground and every last apple has mysteriously disappeared. There is a lot of mystery on the slope of Mount Shasta. This is my backyard.
