I always stop by Arlington National Cemetery whenever I visit the Washington, D.C. area. I have a permanent pass, and I keep it in my briefcase.

I was in Washington all of last week. As I left The Mayflower Hotel Sunday morning, I drove south to Constitution Avenue and then west to the Lincoln Memorial. I crossed the Arlington Memorial Bridge and continued west to the Cemetery. I was waved through security and drove straight to Section 66. (That’s easy to remember. Dad loved “Route 66.”)

The Cemetery was beautiful. There was still quite a bit of color. And it was so quiet. There was no one there! That would change the next day, with ceremonies remembering President Kennedy. (Please see previous post.)

Arlington is a national treasure. Visit when you can.

Here is wishing the entire JPG Family a HAPPY THANKSGIVING! We have a great group of people here. And a lot to be thankful for!

And thanks for stopping by!

The American cemeteries are absolutely perfect and sober, I have always
admired, a green lawn with headstones all the same equidistant between them, to remind us that in death there is no distinction, we are all equal. In our cemeteries are absurd stones, marbles, flowers of every kind, including plastic, niches one above the other, with lights that mimic a burning, weeping angels kneeling sculptures and extravagant dedications. No peace even in death. This your picture next to your father's beautiful and moving tribute and remembrance Best can not be both.

Kate McCrea said (21 Nov 2011):

Thanks for rubbing it in :) Some people talk about visiting all the oceans or resort communities. My goal is to visit as many national cemeteries as I can. My health has been an issue, so STL and MI will have to do for now. Have you been to the cemetery in Mackinac, MI? It's incredible. The people of the island thought the government was doing the up keep and the government thought the islanders were. Very tragic, flags always @ half staff. Worth the trip.
