Last year, Ashlyn, my youngest granddaughter and at that time four-years-old, announced she wanted to take dance lessons. My daughter Kim happily enrolled her in a tap/jazz dance class. Ashlyn’s teacher was amazed over her level of concentration and ability to grasp and perform various jazz steps. Tap, though, was a challenge because her little feet couldn’t make much of a tap sound. This year she made up for it in a Christmas number with Mateo, her dance partner and close friend. To say the least, I was thrilled Fred and I got home in time from Italy to attend this performance. Last spring, Ashlyn and Mateo performed a complex jazz number in front of 400 people. Ashlyn said there’s no way she’d have done that alone, but with Mateo up on stage with her she’s not afraid.

That's my kiddo! She and Mateo are so adorable together. He gives her confidence and she calms him down. He tried to befriend her on the first day of dance class, when all she wanted to do was sit on my lap. The second class he got her away from me so I could make a quiet escape from the room. They've been close ever since. Good thing, because they are the only ones in that class!
