Pompeii was nearly destroyed by an earthquake in 62 AD. Seventeen years later when Vesuvius erupted on the 24th August 79AD, burying the city under ash and rock, Pompeii was still undergoing reconstruction from the earthquake. When I spotted this wall among some of the ruins of that ancient city, I thought about how those surviving the quake fought to restore their community and was struck down before they could.
