This is Friedrich Forssman, during a reading of "The Conspiracy of the Carpenters" ("Die Verschwörung der Zimmerleute"), a monumental novel by German-Jewish expatriate Hermann Borchardt (1888 - 1951). Published in an abridged English version by Simon & Schuster (New York) in 1943, this novel has been brought only recently to the attention of a German speaking audience. Publishing the 1080 pages tome in a two volume edition was a major effort for publisher Stefan Weidle and his team, Friedrich Forssmann being the typographer in charge. Forssmann has also become the first (and presumably the last) to typeset another major beast of modern German literature: "Zettels Traum", a virtually ineditable monster of 1330 multi-columned pages, written in a very private orthography and punctuation by Arno Schmidt(1914 -1979). Forssmann says it took him essentially five years to do it, although he signed the contract twenty years ago. It turns out he is a gifted entertainer in presenting the works he has so stubbornly worked on as a typesetter and typographer. This picture was taken on Jan. 23, 2011 at the same location as The hardships of being a rock'n roller.
