Allison, immediately before and immediately after reading out a monologue from Lynn Nottage's play, 'Ruined.'
'Ruined' is a Brecht-style play about the horrible acts of violence and abuse towards women in the Congo and in Uganda. In the monologue, the character Salima tells the story of how she was kidnapped and raped by soldiers that were supposedly fighting for the freedom of her people.
This shoot was inspired by Children In Need's event in November 2010 called Dramatic Need, in which several award-winning playwrights (including Lynn Nottage) adapted stories and testimonials of children in South Africa into monologues for 15 famous TV actors to perform onstage. The actors were photographed just before going onstage and then immediately after coming offstage, to get two extremely contrasting portraits. Some of the actors included Ben Kingsley, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston and Jenny Jules.
