The first comment mentions "beheading"? No,they wont be beheaded in the US,but they might be shot in the head or murdered for their political beliefs, as in Tucson. Every country in the world has their issues...Matt

@Patty Gross regarding your statement: "Powerful statements, and no one gets beheaded for making their own statements!"
I have to say that in light of recent events in the Middle East, I find this to be a little bit offensive and a HUGE generalization. The innuendo behind the comment is far from subtle, and that kind of attitude is entirely uncalled for. In fact, to me, it belittles the bravery of people all over the Middle East right now from Tunisia to Bahrain who are fighting for their freedom. THOSE are the people who have earned my respect. -
Patty Gross said (22 Feb 2011):
What I said is the truth....I am exercising my freedom of speech. People are beheaded for many, many reasons in the Middle East and Afghanistan. I am still sickened by the beheading of Danny Pearl who went there to try to make peace. I watched the video of the shooting of a young Muslim woman who was led into a soccer stadium in Kabul and forced to kneel while the Taliban shot her in the back of the head. There was the Englishman who was working for a contractor who was beheaded. NO! I will not back down ever again with my freedom of speech. I studied Islam and the Holy Qu'ran for 8 years. I know perfectly well what the terrorists believe, and what every Muslim believes. I know what is written in the Qu'ran. Have you studied Islam at all? I have a cousin who graduated from West Point and is a Major in the US Army. He is a "direct fire commander in Afghanistan. Of course I love our military. My comment was not meant to be "subtle." I hope you will study, really study Islam and have a dialogue for several years with many Muslims living in the ME. I did, and it opened my eyes. I find your assault on my comment extremely offensive. So perhaps we're even.....but study the truth about Islam....study Sharia Law for example AND the Qu'ran, watch the videos of the beheadings of innocent people, then come back and tell me how "improper" my statement was.

Regenia Brabham said (22 Feb 2011):
There is nothing like politics and religion to start debates. I am glad to see you all practicing your freedom of speech. This is the reason we have it. So we can speak for or against the leaders.
-
Patty Gross said (22 Feb 2011):
Amen!
-
nancy m said (23 Feb 2011):
Regenia - I apologise for continuing this but I do feel that I need to respond.
Patty - it's not a competition about who has studied Islam longer or how many relatives you have in Afghanistan. I am not Muslim and so my comment comes from a very unbiased place. In fact, I'm a Christian Egyptian who has lived in the midst of Muslims for over 10 years and my perspective has nothing to do with rhetoric and text books. It has to do with someone who lives in the Middle East and lives amongst Muslims. My closest friends are Muslims and they are more liberal and openminded than you could ever hope to be. I live in a country where the majority of the people are Muslim and would you believe that beheadings are not a form of punishment used in this country?
For you to say you know Muslims and you know Terrorists without attempting to differentiate between the two, for you to talk about beheadings as though it's normal practice for all Muslims, all of these generalisations prove that you are not interested in freedom of speech - unless of course everyone who is speaking with you has the same opinion. That is not freedom of speech. And the fact that you are "offended" by me exercising MY freedom of speech on a comment that you left in an OPEN forum just proves my point - so thanks for that. You can "Amen!" all you want to Regenia's response about freedom of speech but that just makes you a hypocrite. -

nice photo !!! I am serching a shot for this theme!!!

Patty Gross said (23 Feb 2011):
One comment, sorry Regenia, I did not learn about Islam from texbooks, but from conversations with many, many Muslims over a period of 30 years. For 8 years I studied Islam through Islamic websites and the Qu'ran. There is a difference between the general Muslim population and the terrorist Muslim population.....we do know the terrorists are all Muslim. They're certainly not Hungarian, Spanish, Italian, Norwegian, etc. ALL Muslims do believe the hadiths, suras, etc,, as written in the Qu'ran, terrorist and non-terrorist alike. And their holy book specifically tells them to behead the infidel (non-believer), and any Muslim who converts to another religion. Remember Salman Rushkie, who wrote "The Satanic Verses?" They have tried forever to find and execute him. No separation of church and state in Islam.....Sharia Law only! No freedom of speech. I pray for the Muslim people, and my heart aches especially for the women and children of Islam. For anyone who wants to learn the truth, get the Qu'ran (Koran) from you library and study this religion. I will not respond to further posts out of respect for Regenia.

Oregon Curly gave props (2 Mar 2011):
Regina, it is even a more powerful photo that I initially thought, and the comments above show it. I will toss my 2 cents into the ongoing 'debate'. Having lived in Cairo for 8 years, I have learned first hand how the standards for Christians and Muslims are different. Who makes their living by residing in the garbage pits, gleaning food and whatever they can manage to salvage for sale to stay alive, and yet, who protected the Muslims while they prayed during the recent turmoil, and who had their churches attacked? But the issue is not religion here, it is the RIGHT we have to say what we will. EXCEPT where the GOVERNMENT HAS PROHIBITED IT by make (their definition) 'hate speech' a crime. The boundaries of 'hate speech' are constantly being expanded, and you can be prosecuted for speaking your thoughts on a growing number of subjects. Therefore this shot (I use that word now, so far it hasn't been banned) is especially wonderful, and the sidebar debate on religions takes nothing away from it, just enhances the photos meaning.

Just a bit of balance re: O.C.'s mention of Egypt's Christian community helping their Muslim brothers and sisters -- that went in both directions (see http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/3365.aspx), and in fact Egypt's Muslim community has stood by the Christian community in previous years after incidents of intolerance by Muslim extremists. The vast majority of Muslims are people of good will and good intentions, and stereotypes claiming otherwise help no one.

Back to vote. Powerful photo and interesting comments on the string. We, as Americans, are fortunate that we do have freedom of speech, assembly, religion -- I cherish the First Amendment and all that it means. I have had the honor of swearing an oath to protect it from all enemies, foreign and domestic. Hopefully this nation will honor what it means through intelligent discourse and speaking our minds. I may disagree with what you say, but I defend your right to say it (and, I did defend that right).
-
Regenia Brabham said (16 Aug 2011):
Thank you so much for your votes, comments, props and faves everyone. A special thank you to you Thad for your service. It is men like you that make me proud to be an American. I get very upset when people misuse the rights you fought so hard for.

Alwyn Scott Turner said (11 Dec 2011):
Outstanding documentary series on historical events...the worldwide revolution by ordinary peaceful people who represent the 99% Majority that are now determined to stand up and speak out for Freedom & Justice...for the natural Rights Of Life that belong to all mankind - the Right to live honestly in a democracy without lies and deceit, secure from puppet tyrants and stooges that usurp society by conspiracy and subversion, and engage in devious black flag operations to assassinate and incite people to war against each other: The 1% minority - these are the true Terrorists that use brutal force against their own people and mercenary armies to terrorize society and destroy citizens of other cultures.
Who are the hidden and anonymous conspirators of the 1% minority that secretly controls world events behind the scenes? To what nation do they conceal their loyalties? Who are they that dictates to an embedded Media to prevent the Freedom of Speech? And who are they that arranged to appoint the same criminals that carried out the plan to meltdown Wall Street and ruin the financial institutions of America...and who operates the conspiracy at the highest levels of government - that appointed the same Wall Street criminals to high positions in the current adminstration - instead of exposing and prosecuting them as criminals - and who then conspired and ordered the corrupted Police Chiefs across America to brutally raid and suppress the Occupy! Take Back America Movement?
It takes courage to speak the truth...and these documentary photographs are the eyes of the people...through these honest views of reality people can see that they are not alone, and that together they cannot be defeated....a truthful view of reality is the greatest weapon.
The most inspiring element of these historical images - is that it takes a young woman like Nancy to sense the gravity of this historical moment in the reality of our lives....that's you, Nancy - what you feel is the mass consciousness from the 99% that admire and support your courage to challenge those that would use misdirection to divert from the real issues. Truth is the best solution to dissolve the vast conspiracy of the 1% minority hidden regime.
Thank you for your outspoken courage and for being there at the right time, Nancy. -
Regenia Brabham said (12 Dec 2011):
Well thank you but my name is Regenia
-
Alwyn Scott Turner said (15 Jan 2012):
Reginia...yes, I know...I thought Nancy had the right attitude toward the truth.
