Kashmir was riddled with conflict throughout the 90's and in to the new century. At any given time, you can find more troops stationed in the valley than anywhere else in the world. Split between Pakistan and India, there is still a lot of unrest politically.
It is a beautiful and magnetic place, however. The people are incredibly friendly and accommodating. Last year I spent the winter in the himalayas shooting a documentary called Azadi (Freedom.) You can see the trailer here: www.b4apres.com
