I photographed Sadako Sasaki's final paper crane when I met her brother in Hiroshima last summer. She's well known in Japan thanks to the book "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes" which documents her battle with leukemia at the age of 12 from the radiation in Hiroshima and creating a thousand paper cranes in order to make a wish. It seems particularly relevant and meaningful in light of this disaster. I am now trying to create a thousand paper cranes along with my students and photograph them to send a hopeful wish back to Japan.
