I have a small obsession with alleyways. Like the back stage of a theater they somehow feel more real than the facade they support. Behind the most glamorous restaurant is a back door; here the maitre’d can be himself, light up and share stories about the guests he’s been smiling at for the last 4 hours. A police officer rounds the corner to take a private call. For him, too, this is a place where he is beyond scrutiny.
In Miami, especially, the contrast between the alleyway and the front-facing exterior is at it’s most extreme.
Those of us who live here often use them as alternative routes to escape the crowds.
They are, for me, an unlikely oasis of reality in a city that embodies the word ‘fake’.
