Taken in 1990 when food was in short supply and money was even shorter.

The lady is disgusted, angry, sad, and ready to throw in the towel. That is her stall and that 's all she has to sell for that day. The populace was under sanctions imposed during the war going on in Yugoslavia at that time. They had resorted to selling everything they had, even all the furniture from their houses, to people that had no money. All were scrambling to just stay alive. Inflation was the highest since WWI in Germany. An item worth a dollar at 7 in the morning was worth 10 cents at noon and worthless by evening. That went for bank accounts as well.

What an excellent capture of trying times! I recall a friend of mine who had relatives living there, and struggling through this at the time, and how she spoke of the desperation.. A very moving image and narrative!
