Coney Island.
This place is one of the most inspiring I've ever been to. It is so wistful and somehow nostalgic, but I would be hard pressed to explain why. Maybe it’s the decrepit playgrounds and amusement parks that still draw crowds on sunny weekends (though nowhere nearly as many as in their heydays) but look so deserted and forlorn any other time. Or the sea meeting the sand beach and the beautiful boardwalk, mere steps from the Russian neighborhood of Brighton Beach, with gulls circling and crying in the air. Whatever it is, each time I go there, I cannot shake the feeling that I am in one of those places where time is out of joint; funnily, I feel sad and elated at the same time.
