On the waterfront in Geelong these bollards form a narrative of people and events associated through history with Geelong. There are 103 waterfront Bollards as well as 8 more in the Botanical Gardens. These are No. 23 ....The Volunteer Rifle Band. The conductor is leading the Band through a rousing polka. Although the title on the sheet music is The Geelong Polka, the music has been lost and the score is that of the Frozen Fountain Polka by Marriott. the Band is the centre of the whole sculpture and a popular spot for Wedding parties.
The timber used for each figure is from huge reclaimed pier pylons of australian red iron bark or turpentine hardwood, which is then shaped by carver/prop maker Pieter Roos. The painting is in the three dimensional illusion guise.
We had fun finding EVERYONE and photographing them! A very long walk, but so enjoyable.
Thought of Don, when I saw the musicians :)

A great shot and narrative, Sue! I would bet that Don would have taken this same shot! He is quite the musician.

These are absolutely delightful!! A great capture, and how refreshing to see them NOT covered with graffiti, as would surely be the case in the US!!

This is fantastic for a center piece of the displays. Love all the Geelong Bollards, and you have shown them wonderfully well in your photos.
