Spying on the swans at a local lake.. I walked a bit of a distance to get this shot, which was taken through the willows using manual focus. These are a few of the trumpeter swans who will be nesting here and on other local lakes and sloughs.
Although the trumpeter swan has made a remarkable comeback from virtual extinction due to hunting, they are just barely maintaining their numbers at present. They have been saved from the hunter's gun, with the exception of random killings by what must surely be the most heartless of what humanity has to offer; but also, they are still threatened by agricultural draining and destruction of their breeding habitat.

A good story, Heather. Spring is a time for renewal. This shot does that.
