As late as 2007, New Bedford, Massachusetts was the number 1 fishing port in America. Although the fishing fleet has declined in recent years, I didn't see any evidence of that. New Bedford is still a vital fishing port with large numbers of sea going trawlers, scallopers, etc.. In spite of active fishing quotas and mesh size limits, the fleet still fishes on Georges Bank, off the northeast coast. Many of the boats are owned by Portuguese or Norwegian fishermen, who have always had close ties to the sea.
