[Vernal Fall from Glacier Point Road, Yosemite National Park, June 10, 2011]
We took a family vacation to Yosemite National Park (California) in late August, three years ago. We were disappointed that almost all of Yosemite’s waterfalls were “bone dry.” The snowfall the previous winter had been light and, by late summer, there was little runoff anywhere.
Two weeks ago, I saw a story on a national news broadcast about Yosemite’s historic snowfall last winter. The snowpack on Yosemite’s Tioga Pass Road was still 178 inches at the higher elevations.
The historic snowfall – the heaviest in 75 years – was now melting. The effect was described as a “rampage” of water cascading over Yosemite’s waterfalls.
That was all of the “convincing” I needed. I packed my duffel bag.
I entered the park from the south and turned onto Glacier Point Road, which, at almost 9,000 feet, had only recently opened. The adjacent forest was still under deep snow.
Sixteen miles later, I arrived at Glacier Point, where Ansel Adams spent the better part of a half-century shooting Half Dome (inset).
Vernal Fall came into view. Three years ago, Vernal Fall was dry. Not now. I could hear the roar of the water. It was a great moment.
I would work my way down into the Valley for a closer look.
As always, thanks for stopping by.
(I am on the road for two weeks and will not always have Internet. I will catch up with your pix eventually!)

This is an incredible image and place big brother. I can see why you return again and again. I can also see why Ansel Adams spent so much time there.

An amazing shot, T....is that with your new camera? You were really high!! (in elevation, not chemically!!☺) That's an incredible vista; amazing to see the spray from the falls at that distance! I'm sure you heard the roar long before you saw the falls. I'm definitely glad I 'stepped' by!!

I picked a fine time to break in a new camera, didn't I? I am delighted you mentioned, the mist, P. It is a rare sighting and provides evidence of the "hydralulic" onslaught! (Very funny parenthetical, by the way!)

I can hear that rushing water through your wonderful narrative....amazing vista! I do love the manicured paddock on the bottom right. that deep deep green of the trees at the base send your eyes upwards to that tumbling waterfall. What a place to stop by....lucky you. Safe travels Cap'n.

To convince Richard to start after the disappointment earlier, she needs to be worthwhile. The photo taken from a distance and not measures of the size of the leap, there are no terms of comparison, but also so that emotion and wonder. The place is really beautiful and unspoilt and Richard reason he wants to see in all its glory. As always, thanks.
