Q: My sister in-law recently gave me a Canon EOS 10D digital camera body. Having only used point and shoot cameras, what would be a good beginners lens to get for this camera? Should I get kit lens to start with?

A: Do you know?

This year's Red Bull Soapbox Race was held in my backyard, the East Side of Providence, RI on College Hill. Last year I lived just a couple blocks down from this spot! It was an amazing time and I was lucky to be accompanied by two of my favorite new cameras: my Holga 120CFN and my brand new Diana+ from The Lomographic Society. There is no better way to capture these fanatics than with a Lomo camera!

I used my new Diana+ for the candid shots of the crews in the pits and my Holga with high speed film for the race shots. I got a lot of looks from photographers with their D-SLR's! The pit crews were very happy to pose for my unique cameras.

In this photo, team Valhalla Express, 2007 Red Bull Soapbox Race People's Choice winner. The color tones and center focus of this photo really impressed me. Rollie ScanFilm is a great match for the Diana+. The out of focus dragon adds to the mystery of the shot.

UPDATE 3/6/2008: This photo almost made the cut for Issue #15. It was selected for the Fanatic Outtakes pdf.

Created using my brand new Diana+ with Rollei ScanFilm (iso 400). Negative scanned with an HP Scanjet 4890. No digital manipulation used!

This one is really cool. The yellow overtone is neat. And I love how this guy with the crazy beard is looking at you.
