Yesterday as I was fixing my spinich and ham salad for lunch, I glanced out the kitchen window and saw this huge turtle running down the tree line in the yard. Yes, I said running. I grabbed my camera setting my aperture and approximate shutterspeed as I ran down the steps and across the yard. Surprisingly, this guy did not tuck and hide. No, he hissed at me and when I moved ahead of him to shoot him straight on, he charged and hissed at me again. I let him go on his way. If he had been a little nicer, he could have had a spinach salad too.

Great shots, Regenia! A great story too! We have a lot of gopher tortoises around here, but I have never met an aggressive one. He will never know that he missed a sumptuous spinach salad.

You'd probably make a new friend for life if you'd start putting greens out for him.

great story and captures, regenia. i've never heard a turtle hiss, not even a snapper -- but if i had to carry my house on my back everywhere i went, i might be foul-tempered too. :)

He's probably in therapy now! Finally came out of his shell, and look what he got... a mad photographer 'doin a Dawn'. No wonder he threw a hissy fit!!

I love you Susan! You always make me smile. I hope you never grow up. Thanks so much everyone. They do hiss Misha. I have a ball python that hisses too. It is a creepy sound. I get out of her way when she does that.

You have such a sense of humor...I loved that last part if he had been nicer you would have given him a spinach salad.. You really learn something new every day on this site...I didn't know turtles got aggressive. Great shot and I loved the story.

or he could be another pet! he missed a lot of opportunity by not being nice to you. Don't worry I think he will be back, and this time, he will be nicer! Cool captures, Reg.

Sounds like a large snapping turtle I got off a busy road in the 70's. He took a big bite out the the Styrofoam cooler top I was using to move him. I got him off the road and did not say good bye!!

I was so happy that the turtle came back today! He was still in a hurry but not quite so mean. I tried to give it some spinach, but he didn't take the time to try it. We squirted it down with some water since it is so very hot out today.
