Driving back from Sioux City Iowa passing through Swaburg Nebraska I spotted an abandoned house on the side of the road, submerged in trees and overgrown looking quite dilapidated and in the sate of decomposition. I thought instantly of great photo opportunities to be had, I turned around and headed back.

Alas, there was a no trespassing sign, my traveling partner was apprehensive not wanting to get arrested or to have to bail me out of a small town prison cell or pay a fine.

I coaxed her inadverdent participation by kind gentle words and pulled up into the now nearly impassible drive, popped the hood and stated, we need to check the oil... I stated I needed to stretch my legs, I knew my time would be short...I approached the old structure..surveying the parameter, The front door was blocked with several sturdy boards, but I found a way in through the back door which was non existent. I did not venture inside as the floor was in a very bad state of decomposition and in some placed rotted all the way through, as I did not want to investigate the basement, I stayed in the doorway and took a few shots knowing that would be the extent of my exploration.

This photograph seems to be the kitchen area as the stove was clearly visible minus the burners. There were no other amenities such as a sink or a refrigerator, What had become of these?, had someone removed them?..had vandals or perhaps the previous owners carried them off to be used elsewhere?..There was no way to ever tell...

It was obviously a long time since anyone had lived here, perhaps several decades.

I wondered if the owners had relocated, moved on or had perhaps died?

Sometimes in these circumstances, a new house is built close by, and the old one is left to rot.

There was no other houses around, just an old barn, I was not about to hang out and ponder the possibilities, I knew my partner was by this time getting anxious. I had time for a few more photos and then it was time to vamoose..

A shot like this does force you to ponder the past . . . the who, the what, and the why. Well seen.
