He is waiting for me to throw a morsel for him. I took this shot at the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park. He is captive there, because when he was free he was hand fed, and has lost his fear of humans. He is dangerous, because he has no fear. Many like him are not so lucky, because they are killed; sometimes after they have hurt a person, or eaten someone's dog. This is the fault of ignorant humans, since gators have a natural fear of people.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE SPOTLIGHT, LYNN!!!

-
Ann Reece gave props (21 Sep 2011):
Excellent photo and narrative about feeding the alligators. It's a shame that people won't just enjoy seeing them without feeding them, they have no idea of what it will do to the alligator!

He's got that one eye on his next feed, Judy. Sad life for him, when he should be free. A great picture of his dappled water hole..

I agree with you wholeheartedly, Judy. The wild animals were put here on earth for a purpose, and that purpose was NOT to become a pet. They should be left alone and not toyed with by those who are ignorant of their need for freedom, or those who are just plain mean! What a fantastic photo you captured of him in his permanent "home" now. Thanks for sharing

As a captive, he could not be in a better place. He and about 11 others live in a very large "gator lagoon", which is a huge double fenced area of a large canal from the Homosassa River. He has 2 very large gravel beaches on which to sun, and he is fed a diet prescribed by some highly educated dieticians from the U of Florida. I don't think his little reptilian brain worries too much about this, since the reason for his creation was just to "eat", and he never has time to get too hungry before his next meal is delivered to him. As an alternative to fighting to exist, this is not too bad. How much he appreciates it, only he knows.

People think they are doing them a kindness by feeding them but there is always someone in line waiting to hurt them. Sad. A great shot Judy.
