Cape Pallarenda, about a 5 minute drive out of the city heart of Townsville, has always had the feel of being much more remote than it actually is. The Cape has always been a source of some fascination to me. My family used to come out this way when I was a kid for picnics. My brother and sister, and sometimes a few friends, and I would clamber around the rocky headland at the northern end of Rowes Bay and make our way slowly around to Shelly Bay. The tidal rock pools and sharply eroded rocky outcrops were a constant source of excitement and presumed danger, which was actually more a sense of the unknown, since we never really knew what lay around each corner or over each rock.
This view is facing south from Cape Pallarenda over Rowes Bay towards Castle Hill and the city itself at dawn, minutes before sunrise.
