[Zion National Park, Utah; June, 2011]
Two years ago, I wrote a “JPG” narrative, “The American West – Which Way?” Here’s what I said:
“What you see often depends on the direction you are driving.
“When driving a 3,000-mile loop in a week to ten days, time is critical. Such a demanding schedule leaves little room for error. There are no second chances.
“That is why it is so important to select the right routes, because there will be no time to go back. To illustrate the point, consider Zion National Park.
“Zion should be entered from the east (Mt. Carmel Junction). The descent to the valley floor is spectacular. You miss that effect when entering Zion from the southwest.”
Well, guess what? This summer, I broke my own rule and entered Zion from the southwest, exactly what I said you shouldn’t do!
But, had I not broken my rule, I might not have seen the sign saying “WELCOME DOGGY DUDES”!!!
I knew that this was a “JPG moment.”
I followed the arrow to the “Doggy Dude Ranch.” I mean, who wouldn’t?
Now I have all these national parks to revisit . . . from the “wrong” direction.
As always, thanks for stopping by!
