I just can't get away from this picture I shot in a rural market in the deep south of the Dominican Republic. Aside from the warm, sad beauty of the main subject, this picture tells me stories about Dominican Diaspora, the desire to travel away from that beautiful land to America, to Europe, as the only chance for so many people to try and earn a decent living. Also, it tells me stories about the frustration, the disenchantment of loosing , or at least leaving behind one's own roots in this migratory process.
This young woman, a ray of sunshine in the cluttered marketplace, looks at me, looks at us, probably desiring and deserving something better for her future. Something we can't offer her, something that perhaps she'll be unable to attain.
