She hears his heavy breathing in the dark
His footsteps coming closer down the hall
She's so ashamed, she's daddy's secret love
She wants to cry, she wants to die, but he can't get enough

The bruises on his face will go away
Mom keeps him home from school till they fade
She's sorry he was born and tells him so
He takes it in, he hangs his chin, he ducks another blow

Did God overlook it
What ought have been written
The eleventh commandment
Honor thy children

He cries for hours, cries and never stops
He shakes so hard his little cradle rocks
He'll never have the chance to be brand new
He'll never walk, he'll never talk, he's addicted too

Did God overlook it
What ought have been written
The eleventh commandment
Honor thy children

Thou shalt not kill
Thou shalt not steal
Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain
Thou shalt not cause thy children pain

God does not overlook it
What ought have been written
The eleventh commandment
Honor thy children
Honor thy children

Thank you for your positive feedback. To Jim ~ These were my eyes for many years. My work often comes from the emotional scars and fear that was created in a house without doors.

Une touche de Baudelaire, de Rimbaud une touche ... une image vraiment exquis qui coupe si profondément.

I too was a victim until I left home at 16, but have so much guilt leaving my siblings behind and out of 7 there are only 3 left. You can never be the same no matter how hard you try, but what I believe that makes us stronger is we know and feel each child's hurt and fear that we read about or see in the news and we as adults do not turn a deaf ear or blind eye, we take action because we see ourselves. Beautifully done!

Charlena ~ It is such a pleasure to meet you and to read your words. We all need each other because of 'our' sameness, No one can truly ever understand the impact and ripple effect unless they've lived it. It defines me and, many days, it controls me. However, all of that can be channeled into avenging those who are living this now. Antenna on and full up. We have their backs. Thank you for your ability to say it out loud. There is healing in that action.Thank you also for the time you've taken to read and comment. It is appreciated.

I'm another survivor. I have never known what the word "family" really means.... Thanks for this wonderful post, Bailey.

  • Bailey Cooper

Bailey Cooper said (20 Jan 2013):

A pleasure to meet you Barbara. There are so many of us. It is far more common today to speak it out loud. When this was happening in my family, lots of people knew but it was never addressed. It was excused. It always makes me smile when I meet someone who has lived this. That means we ARE talking and we are DONE hiding. Thanks for your feedback darlin'.

The most potent combination of image and words I've experienced. This explains so much. Cuts to the core, yet at the same time overflows with strength and hope. You show this time and again through your words and your images. In my book this makes you a winner in the deepest sense.
