I need to learn how to do this. But first I need to find a place where I can actually see the stars..... Sometimes California can be too smoggy. Ugh.

This is great. You need to explain how to do this. I live in rural Texas and like the song says "The stars at night are big and bright...deep in the heart of Texas." This is a really neat shot.

I'd love to see the stars in Texas, like Amy said, California can be kinda hard to capture star trails.
Get yourself some film (I prefer Fuji NEOPAN 400) and a camera (the larger the format the better) with a good and wide lens. I'd recommend a Hasselblad system with a 50 or 40 mm lens. Don't forget your cable release and tripod. Go somewhere where the stars are gleaming, set the camera up, and shoot. It's that easy. Just be patient and consider the composition.
I develop my own film to control the developing time and highlights. Don't forget to print the photos, :) -
