[General Store, Victor, Colorado, Pop. 270, October 2010]

Victor, Colorado is in the heart of Colorado’s gold country. It's off the beaten path, that's for sure. From Colorado Springs, take U.S. # 24 west to Divide, and then Colorado #67 south through Cripple Creek to Victor. It takes about 75 minutes to get there.

Victor, and its better known neighbor, Cripple Creek, lie in the most productive gold mining district in the United States. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the district produced more than $6 billion in gold (in today’s dollars).

When I was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado (1971-73), Linda and I spent a lot of time in the gold country. Victor was little more than a ghost town then. Abandoned mines, rusted railway cars, and dilapidated buildings littered the landscape.

Today, Victor enjoys a mild resurgence, thanks to the casinos in nearby Cripple Creek and the soaring value of gold. Now a tourist destination, Victor features several attractions, including a museum that honors the renowned war correspondent, Lowell Thomas, who lived there as a boy, tours of the mines, a small historic district, and a little art.

When returning to Colorado Springs from Victor, one has the option of taking the famous Gold Camp Road all the way to Colorado Springs’ iconic Broadmoor Hotel. The road is spectacular (and safe).

The Colorado gold country would be an ideal venue for a JPG meet-up.

As always, thanks for stopping by!

We're fortunate to have you back! Hope you didn't spend a fortune in the store!! Fortunately, I read the link and I can definitely agree that this would be a great place for a meet-up, and with the price of gold, quite possibly a good place to find fame and fortune!! Fortunately, I've run out of ways to use the word, so I'll just say great pic!!

Very intriguing photo of this eclectic building, Dick! I love these places....just to go spend some time wandering through the aisles and hallways, seeing the people there enjoying themselves. There's always so much to see and enjoy. Your narrative is very much an eye-opener to this town and its history. Very well composed, both the photo and the narrative!!! You have been greatly missed here on JPG!!!!!!!!!!!!
